North Canterbury Weekly Fishing Report - 10th October 2024

What is happening in North Canterbury?

It's the final week of the school holidays, and there's still time to catch fish at Groynes Lakes! Take the family out and enjoy the opportunity. Just remember, Groynes Lakes is a JUNIOR fishery, so only those under 17 are allowed to fish there.

If you're up for a bigger adventure, a few high-country lakes remain open for fishing. With the larger braided rivers likely to be too dirty to fish this weekend, I recommend trying the spring creeks instead. These clear waters may hold more fish, as they tend to move away from the murky rivers into cleaner streams.

Last weekend, our staff conducted compliance checks in the Hurunui Lakes area. We had great interactions with anglers, all of whom were fully compliant, and it was great to hear that most had successful fishing!

If you haven't visited the Hurunui Lakes area yet, I encourage you to plan a weekend getaway. There's a campsite at Lake Taylor and Loch Katrine, and you can use motorised boats on Lakes Taylor, Sumner, and Loch Katrine. Just note that trolling is prohibited on Loch Katrine and be sure to follow all boating rules and regulations.

Weather across the region

At this early stage, Friday and Saturday are shaping up to be excellent days for exploring the wild landscapes and waters of the region. With high and murky flows in the main rivers, try checking out spring creeks and side branches, you might just find some excellent fish lurking in these waters. The lakes currently open for fishing are also producing great results, offering a fantastic weekend fix for anglers of all levels.

However, with river flows elevated, it’s essential to check flow conditions and weather warnings before heading out. Be sure to factor in travel time and the potential for fatigue on longer trips to ensure a safe and enjoyable adventure!
