Angling prime time
Cicada success for Andrew Harding.
More crazy weather has impacted the country but the Wellington region has missed the worst of Cyclone Gita.
The upshot is that the frequent freshes have kept the river flows up during an incredibly hot spell of weather.
The cicadas seem to have tapered off but trout throughout the region are still feeding furiously off the surface, with a smorgasbord of passion hoppers, blowflies, crickets, mayflies and caddis on offer.
Indeed, whilst making it rather uncomfortable for us, the incredibly humid conditions have exacerbated the insect life, with swarms of caddis coming off certain rivers on dusk and some of the best mayfly hatches we’ve seen for ages.
This is making for fantastic fishing, especially immediately after falling flows when trout are super hungry.
February, March and April are traditionally the times when trout start to really feed up so they can put condition on for spawning. It means anglers are in with a very good shot of bagging plenty of fat fish that aren’t overly fussy in what they will take.
